Thinking about this year's challenges
Aug. 14th, 2019 09:32 amSo I'm trying out the whole plotting-in-advance thing for a couple of challenges that are coming up this year. One, I can't plot for; I've signed up for the 00Q Reverse Bang and will have to wait for inspiring art before I actually tackle that story.
But two others could get plotted. I plan to sign up for the Rough Trade Divergent Path challenge in November, and I've already signed up for Quantum Bang again.
The problem I'm running into today, beyond the challenges themselves, is what I want to tackle with each of those stories. I tend to fall back on fandoms I know really, really well, to make the writing go more easily. But I'm wondering if it's time to further challenge myself and write in a new fandom.
I love, for example, playing with the Arthurian legend. I loved BBC's Merlin Series, but I've been an Arthur legend junkie since I was a child. The problem with using Arthur and Merlin as a centerpiece in a contemporary fic is that it's clear that Arthur would only return if his kingdom was in dire straits and needed him for something big, bad, and awful. Not really conducive to a fix-it, really. I've played with this concept before, too; two "episodes" of a series featuring this idea can be found on the Wild Hare Project. (Last One Out: Beginnings and Endings and Last One Out: Defining the Struggle)
My other problem is that I've sort of head-canoned myself into a corner with The Holmes Factor. I'm not sure I want to play in the Holmes world right now unless I take that as my head canon and move forward with a second piece, maybe focusing on one of the "kids", and those would not be right for either challenge.
What to do, what to do.
I'm still working on "Spark," from last year's November Rough Trade, and it's almost finished. That's an X-Men/Teen Wolf Crossover. I'll be posting that on Wild Hare and Ao3 when I'm done with it, and I'm in spitting distance of the end now.
So I suppose I could look at other fandoms to write in for the new fix it. For example, the tragedy of Tony Stark needs help. The tragedy of Loki needs help. The tragedy of Steve Rogers needs help. (Seriously, I'm pissed that they totally ruined his character in a throwaway fashion ... Hmmm.)
Eh. Just writing this out has been useful, too. Still, I probably will sit here, plotting away, for the next little while.
